Chris is Malik's* Friend, a professional mentor who spends time with him consistently, supporting him as he confronts life's challenges. Over time, Chris noticed that Malik often hinted at a desire to learn more about his own culture. Chris combined that curiosity with Malik’s existing love of art, and together they created a goal to help Malik explore both.

At Friends of the Children, helping youth discover and nurture their “sparks”, the interests and passions that light them up, is a core part of how we empower youth in our program. When young people have the chance to explore what excites them, they build confidence, identity, and a stronger sense of what’s possible for their future.

This year, Malik and Chris set a goal to connect with culture and community by studying the work of Black artists during their weekly outings.

“Malik’s biggest spark is art,” Chris shared. “He loves creating things to express himself or give as gifts. By connecting his love of art with his desire to learn more about his culture, Malik gets to see artists and art that reflect who he is.”

Over the past few months, Malik and Chris have fully embraced this goal. They created masks inspired by artist Kimmy Cantrell, using cardboard and clay to explore identity. They also visited the Urban Arts Gallery in Salt Lake City, which was hosting an exhibit described as “a celebration of creativity, community, and self-expression featuring the works of BIPOC artists”, a perfect stop on Malik’s ongoing journey.

Chris recalls Malik’s excitement as they walked through the exhibit:

"Whoa! How did they make that? That’s so cool!"

Malik was captivated by everything from pop culture pieces to artwork reflecting social injustices faced by people of color, and even sculptures of dragons.

Week after week, the guidance of a caring, trusted adult helps a young person find and cultivate their inner spark. What began as a hint of interest became something deeper—an opportunity for Malik to strengthen his sense of belonging, identity, and pride in who he is. We can’t wait to watch Malik continue to explore, grow, and take pride in who he is with the caring, consistent support of his Friend.
